TOM
(anonymised photo- not actual child)
Tom, aged 9, was referred to us by his school. He was close to permanent exclusion, as he was constantly disruptive in class. He found socialising difficult and was becoming increasingly angry and aggressive at play time. During the play therapy sessions Tom embraced drama and through this form his therapist helped him to create and explore stories based on his past experiences, some of which were deeply traumatic. After 20 weeks of play therapy sessions, he had worked through many of his issues and became progressively more able to settle down and do his schoolwork. His teachers reported that for the first time ever he was seen choosing to read a book and he began to engage with other children in small-group work. Socially things improved for him as he began to play appropriately and make friends.
