TOM

(anonymised photo- not actual child)

Tom, aged 9,  was referred to us by his school.  He was close to permanent exclusion, as he was constantly disruptive in class. He found socialising difficult and was becoming increasingly angry and aggressive at play time.  During the play therapy sessions Tom embraced drama and through this form his therapist helped him to create and explore stories based on his past experiences, some of which were deeply traumatic. After 20 weeks of play therapy sessions, he had worked through many of his issues and became progressively more able to settle down and do his schoolwork. His teachers reported that for the first time ever he was seen choosing to read a book  and he began to engage with other children in small-group work. Socially things improved for him as he began to play appropriately and make friends.

ALICE

(anonymised photo/name)

Alice,14 was referred to us by her mother who described Alice as despairing, withdrawn and said she rarely spoke and when she did she talked of killing herself. She increasingly refused to go to school and her teachers believed this was because she had been previously teased and bullied - although she would not talk to anyone about how she felt. She had recently received a diagnosis of Asbergers Syndrome.  At her therapy sessions Alice would not speak, choosing instead to play silently with Lego for long periods and her therapist quietly played along side her - understanding that the complex Lego models Alice made represented a non-threatening and non-verbal opportunity for Alice to communicate how she felt. In fact Alice did not speak at all for the first 15 weeks of play therapy sessions but never refused to come to her sessions and increasingly engaged with her therapist through play. At week 16 Alice started speaking and then became increasingly verbally communicative as the therapy continued and the sessions changed dramatically from then on – to the point of Alice expressing her feelings and fears in words. By week 20 Alice was speaking at home, asking for her needs to be met and she began talking positively about going back to school.
